Derek debates local impact of loan sharks at the heart of Westminster

13 Jan 2011

On Monday, Derek secured the first end of day Adjournment Debate at the House of Commons for 2011, and raised the issue of the threat of loan sharks preying upon vulnerable people heavily indebted after the pressures of Christmas.

Derek paid tribute to Carol Highton, whose son Brian Shields committed suicide in December 2005 amidst intimidation from notorious Runcorn-based loan shark Paul Nicholson, jailed in 2009 for other offences relating to his illegal lending.

Derek raised several issues of concern to the charity she founded, The Brian Shields Trust.
