Derek expresses concern over future of Whiston Hospital |

Derek has spoken of his concern at secret Government plans to turn over control of Whiston Hospital to the private sector. In a week in which Derek joined others in presenting a petition to 10 Downing Street against the transfer of Whiston Hospital to the private sector, revelations in a document obtained by The Guardian newspaper, suggest that the Department of Health is currently considering plans to hand over the running of up to 20 NHS hospitals to foreign private firms. Although at present the Government has only authorised the private takeover of one hospital, Hinchingbrooke in Cambridgeshire, Whiston Hospital is widely believed to be one of the 20 NHS hospitals being considered for private takeover. In response to the news, Derek said; "It is clear that this is yet more bad news for Whiston Hospital and the local people it serves. The Guardian's story shows that despite Government denials, plans to hand over large parts of the health service to the private sector, including Whiston Hospital, are continuing at full speed. I have always been clear that whatever happens, Whiston Hospital must remain under full public control. It has received a double excellent rating for care in the past and offers a superb service to local people. The Tory-led Government has no right to simply pass our local hospital to the private sector. It is unacceptable and I shall do all I can to make sure this doesn't happen."
