Derek helps children celebrate World School Milk Day

08 Oct 2012

Derek helped children at St Gerard's RC Primary School in Widnes celebrate World School Milk Day by handing out milk to the children.

St Gerard's was one of thousands of schools across the more than thirty countries taking part in events to mark World School Milk Day on 26th September, adding to its Healthy School Status. The day encourages children to drink milk, aiming to educate them about its benefits, and was instituted in 2000 as an initiative of the Food & Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO).

School milk is free for children in day-care or primary education under the age of 5 and subsidised for school children aged 5-11 in the UK.

With milk delivered fresh and chilled to the classroom, distributed by the children and consumed as a group, it aids their social development, including in the areas of responsibility, independence and manners.  Children's health and physical development is also aided through the improved hydration and concentration they recieve from the nutrients and vitamins in milk.

Derek said:

"I am delighted to have visited St Gerard's RC Primary on 26th September to support the pupils and staff as they celebrated World Milk Day."
