Derek joins Shadow Health Team on Opposition Front Bench

14 Oct 2010

Derek has expressed his delight at returning to front bench politics this week as he was appointed to Labour's Shadow Health Team by new Leader Ed Miliband. Derek joins former Leadership candidate Diane Abbott, Emily Thornberry and Liz Kendall as Shadow Ministers working with Shadow Health Secretary John Healey. He will be shadowing Coalition Minister Simon Burns in his responsibilities, focused primarily on NHS standards, capital funding and appointments. On hearing of his appointment, Derek said: "I am very honoured and humbled to accept this important Health post by our new Labour Leader Ed Miliband. I am proud of the NHS and the support given to it by the last Labour Government.

Having had front bench experience in the previous Government as a Minister for Education, Transport and Defence, I am pleased to hold this challenging portfolio in my other main policy interest, Health. As a former Veterans Minister in the Ministry of Defence, I am also pleased to assume shadowing responsibility for veterans' health issues. I am looking forward to playing a leading role in holding the Coalition Government to account at this critical time for NHS provision."
