Derek lends his support for statue to honour World War One Victoria Cross hero

09 Jul 2012

Derek has lent his backing for an appeal to raise funds for the erection of a statue for local First World War hero, Victoria Cross recipient 'Todger' Jones.

Set to be placed in the Memorial Garden opposite the Greenway Road Cenotaph in Runcorn, the statue will honour the sacrifice and courage of Thomas Alfred 'Todger' Jones VC DCM, who under intense enemy and friendly fire captured over 100 German prisoners at the Battle of Morval in September 1916.

Derek said:

"I'm delighted to be lending my support to the local campaign to erect a statue in honour of Victoria Cross recipient 'Todger' Jones.

The Todger Jones Statue Appeal is an excellent local campaign which sees Halton Royal British Legion, the Cheshire Regiment Assoiciation, the Borough Council, local schools and media, and others working in partnership to try and secure the £80,000 necessary to erect the statue to Runcorn's Victoria Cross hero.

I would encourage local people to log onto the Todger Jones Statue Appeal website at register your support and donate whatever you can for this cause to honour our local war heroes."
