Derek attended the All Party Parliamentary Rugby League Group meeting on Tuesday to hear an excellent presentation about the Rugby League's 'State of Mind' programme. He was presented with a 'State of Mind' T-shirt by Great Britain Rugby League legends Terry O'Connor and Brian Carney at the event on 25th October.
Derek said;
"I was pleased to attend this important presentation which will help inform parliamentarians of the important work being undertaken by Rugby League in the area of mental health. As the Halton MP and a lifelong Widnes Vikings supporter, I am proud of the close involvement of Terry O'Connor and the Widnes Club in this initiative. Again, it is Rugby League leading the way in sport on important issues."
The State of Mind programme in Rugby League arose following the tragic death of former England and Great Britain player Terry Newton. The programme links local clubs, both amateur and professional, in pursuing community well-being, mental health improvement, prevention of suicide and misuse of substances."
