Derek was pleased to visit Widnes railway station last Friday to view the completed improvement works to the station, which include the delivery of new lighting, CCTV, new paladin fencing, height restriction barrier, new kerbs, surfacing and drainage. In addition there has been a large extension of the car park which should improve the parking situation encountered in neighbouring streets.
Widnes station is famous for being the place where Paul Simon composed the lyrics to his song 'Homeward Bound'. Derek had previously opened the refurbished ticket office at the station.
"It's good to see the improvements that have taken place at this increasingly busy railway station which provides an excellent link to both Liverpool and Manchester and other parts of the country. I am pleased that my lobbying has helped focus the need to make these much needed improvements and particularly thank Halton Borough Council for their important role in making this happen, along with Network Rail and Northern Rail. I am also encouraged to hear that efforts are will be made to improve parking at Hough Green station."
