Derek visits Canal Boat Adventure Project

24 May 2012

Derek joined young people and workers involved in the Canal Boat Adventure Project on Saturday 12 May to hear about their work and achievements.

Derek said:

"It was great to see the enthusiasm of the young people and hear about their work and many achievements.  The Project has made a real and long lasting positive impact on the lives of many young people in the area."

The Canal Boat Adventure Project, set up in 1976, is a provider of canal boats as resources to youth groups, schools and services for young people in Halton and the surrounding area.

Generous lottery funding between 1990 and 2001 provided new canal boats, paid outreach workers and a project manager; however, the Community Funds' greatest legacy was a commitment to full participation by local volunteers.  When seven young people who were 13/14 years of age at that time were encouraged to get involved in restructuring the Project, alongside a recently retired youth service manager, it could not have been predicted that this small cohort of allegedly failing young people would turn this scheme into an innovative canal boat-based social inclusion project. This has enabled over 1000 vulnerable young people to overcome poverty, entrenched unemployment and benefit dependancy within families, and to achieve full career-based employment, university places and volunteering in the developing world.
