Derek Visits site of the New Mersey Gateway Bridge

18 Mar 2015
Derek visited the site of the Mersey Gateway Bridge construction works on Monday to hear about the progress being made on this very important project. On site he met with Cllr Rob Polhill, leader of Halton Borough Council and Mersey Link general manager, Hugh O’Connor, who briefed him on progress with the building works. Derek was able to see various parts of the construction site and went on to the trestle bridge which is now reaching out into the Mersey. The trestle bridge will be used to help build the Mersey Gateway.

Derek has played a pivotal role in moving the bridge project forward and getting government backing for the bridge. He also led the campaign to persuade the present Conservative-led government to drop plans to charge a toll for Halton residents to cross the Runcorn-Widnes Bridge and the new bridge. Halton residents will now be able to travel toll free across the bridges.

Derek said;

“It was great to be able to see the progress in constructing the bridge first-hand and have a briefing from Mersey Link.  I was particularly pleased to be able to walk out on to the trestle bridge which is moving rapidly out into the river. I was also able to view the works going on in the river relating to one of the piers. This is a really exciting and important project for Halton but also for the sub-region of Cheshire and Merseyside. It is essential to relieve the congestion on the current bridge.”
