Halton MP Condemns Tory led Government over Cuts to Student Funding

14 Jan 2014

Derek Twigg has exposed the impact of government cuts to funding for Halton on students. Before Christmas the DfE announced a cut to the funding for 18 year olds in education by 17.5% which equates to £700.

 Riverside College currently have 360 students who fall into this category which means a cut of £250,000 to their funding from September 2014.

Derek said;

“This is an appalling decision withdrawing funding from colleges which means they will have to fund the gap from already diminished resources. It’s quite a sly cut from this government because they know colleges will do all they can to ensure these students can continue with their courses.

It also hits the most deprived areas the most such as Halton, which have already suffered badly from the withdrawal of the Educational Maintenance Allowance.

I have written to Ministers demanding they reverse this cut and I have also tabled a Parliamentary Question asking them to publish their impact assessment.”
