Halton MP Wins Fight to Keep Widnes TA Centre Open

11 Nov 2014
Derek Twigg MP has managed to persuade the Government to reconsider their position over the closure of Army Reserve Centre in Widnes and has today had confirmation that the Centre is to remain open.

Derek said: “I welcome this decision by the Ministry of Defence to keep the TA Centre open and this is an issue I have been campaigning about for many months.  If the Government are going to recruit more Reservists to the Army we need a TA Centre in Halton and I am pleased that the Minister for Reserves, Julian Brazier, has made this possible.”

The Minister said in his letter to Derek: “…As a result I am pleased to be able to formally tell you that the Army Reserve Centre in Widnes will be retained and the situation will be reviewed in June 2017, to see whether the Army Reserve has been able to maintain or increase its presence to the extent that a permanent presence in Widnes is viable.

I am sure that this news will be welcomed by you and your community and hope that the opportunity to retain a Reserve presence in Widnes will be fully embraced.  I know that you have been a committed and loyal supporter of the Reserves in your area and I would welcome your continued assistance and support in communicating the vital contribution that Reservists make and the benefits that they can bring to employers in your community.”
