Transport Secretary tells Derek that Mersey Gateway announcement is due in the autumn

24 Aug 2011

Transport Secretary Philip Hammond has telephoned Derek to update him on the progress of the Mersey Gateway Project.

This was in response to a meeting Derek had requested with Mr Hammond.  Derek has led the campaign for the Mersey Gateway in Parliament.

Derek said:

"I was pleased that the Transport Secretary took the time to ring me to give an update on the progress of the Mersey Gateway Project.  He confirmed that he expects an announcement to be made in either September or October.  Although he could not confirm what the decision will be, he did say he was very pleased with the progress that has been made and praised Halton Council for the constructive way it has been working with his offiicials.  He confirmed that the Project was now with the Treasury for 'sign off.'

I am now totally confident that the Mersey Gateway will shortly be given the green light given the Chancellor's visit to Halton last year to view the site of the new bridge, and the Prime Minister's positive comments on his visit to Daresbury last week."

Derek will be writing to the Chancellor George Osborne to ask him to sign off the Project quickly so as to ensure that costs do not continue to rise."
